Know your emotions, OWN YOUR EMOTIONS

What is Emotional Intelligence?

I keep it real simple. I define emotional intelligence as the ability to:

  • Recognize, understand and manage our own emotions

  • Recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others

In practical terms, this means being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively), and learning how to manage those emotions – both our own and others – especially when we are under pressure.

How to Measure Emotional Intelligence

Assessment of our emotional quotient, or EQ, is not an end in itself. It’s a means to an end. The EQ-i 2.0 gives us information about our EQ competencies so we can best decide our next steps to becoming more effective leaders and stronger team players.

Fifteen Emotional Competencies

Emotional intelligence is part nature and part nurture. We can’t change our genetic make-up, however, we can become aware of what we’ve learned and we can choose to learn to do better. When we turn our attention to these 15 “EQ” competencies, we can make better decisions, communicate with greater clarity, increase our capacity to cope with stress and build stronger, more connected relationships.

Assess, Predict, Perform

Measurement of our EQ is the first step. But how can emotional intelligence be measured? Is it reliable? Does it have predictive value? Is it scientific? These are the kinds of questions that, over two decades, have led us to recommend using the EQ-i 2.0, a Level B Psychometric assessment based on the research of Dr. Reuven Bar-On, published by Multi-Health Systems Inc, or MHS. It is one of the most reliable, valid and highly researched EQ assessment tools (PDF).

Because it is a Level B Psychometric, this means that the EQ-i 2.0 can only be given by a certified administrator (that's me!).The EQ-i 2.0 model of emotional intelligence is based on fifteen competencies grouped into five composites: Self-Perception, Self-Expression, Interpersonal, Decision Making and Stress Management.

The fifteen competencies, taken together, provide a total EQ. The EQ-i 2.0 report also provides some initial interpretation of the fifteen competencies. A one-to-one debrief is always included with an EQ-i 2.0 assessment, as results need to be interpreted by a certified administrator(that's me!).

The fifteen competencies in the EQ-i 2.0 act as building blocks for developing competencies. To do this, each subscale must measure different skills. For example, our ability to have strong interpersonal skills is different than our capacity to be intelligently aware of ourselves. These capacities need to be measured separately. Further, our ability to be intelligently aware of ourselves, or self-perception, can be further analyzed into its component parts: self-regard, self-actualization, and emotional self-awareness. When we have a refined set of competencies, that relate to each other but measure different skills, we can build development plans that produce real change. In addition to the fifteen competencies and the five composites, the EQ-i 2.0 report provides a total EQ inventory and a well-being indicator, providing information about the big picture of someone’s life.

The report features:

  • Total EQ

  • Five composite scales

  • Fifteen competencies, or sub-scales

  • Well-being indicator

  • Interpretation and elaboration of the potential meanings and impacts of these measures

The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i 2.0) is the world’s leading assessment tool used for assessing emotional and social intelligence and an excellent way to understand the emotional competencies of an individual. It is a ‘self-rater’ instrument. The EQ-i 2.0 provides us with a picture of how we operate emotionally, our areas of strength and potential areas for development.

The assessment tool is delivered online, using a secure site and involves responding to 133 statements, taking approximately twenty minutes to complete. Once completed, there are two report types to choose from: the Workplace Report and the Leadership Report, each providing scores in 15 competencies, grouped into five composite areas: Self-Perception, Self-Expression, Interpersonal, Decision Making and Stress Management.  The reports we receive provide a detailed analysis of our results.

EQ Coaching Is Focused

There are many ways to develop our EQ competencies. In my experience, changing how we operate in our daily lives and relationships takes time and support. The best way we have found to support this ongoing work is through EQ coaching. I believe that once individuals have an opportunity to learn about what emotional intelligence is and how it is critical to their success at work and in their lives, they want to improve their EQ skills. A proven method to improve your EQ is through EQ coaching. Coaching is an integral part of the process and a powerful way to get the most out of our assessment experience. My recommended process begins with an EQ-i 2.0 Self Assessment. Results highlight our strengths and point to areas for development opportunity. It will also give us a detailed picture of how balanced our 15 EQ competencies are.

As an example, if someone scores higher in problem-solving and lower in assertiveness, that individual might be a leader who holds back on sharing solutions. He or she may want to develop assertiveness skills so they can effectively communicate insights with his or her team or organization.

I have always lead the way by combining the EQ-i 2.0 Assessment with more than the required one-to-one debrief. After an assessment, we will meet in person or by telephone to review the results of the emotional intelligence assessment. Together, we will create a plan for how we can get to your future desired outcomes. Research shows that consistent one-to-one coaching sessions will ensure your continued progress towards reaching your goals.

Learning a new skill, transitioning to a new role or building your capacity? Having a plan is essential. The EQ-i 2.0 provides you and I with critical information about your strengths and capacities. It also shows you where you need to focus your development. You and I will have an opportunity to formulate a plan, identify goals and embrace change. EQ coaching helps to create the time and energy to accelerate the changes you are looking for.
